The first would comprise two plays: William Wordsworth ’s The Borderers and Samuel Taylor Coleridge ’s Osorio.

But this plan was changed so that the book was anonymous and would begin with the poem The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. A Collection of Old Ballads is an anonymous book published - in three volumes in London by Roberts and Leach.

It was the second major collection of British folksongs to be published, following Wit and Mirth, or Pills to Purge Melancholy (published - ). Newfoundland songs are diverse in origin. Vast numbers of them come from the British Isles, especially from England and Ireland; many are composed in Newfoundland, usually on English or Irish models; a lesser number of American, Canadian, and French songs are current.

The ballads to be found in the Child collection are probably the oldest now sung. This last fact (among many others) I learnt from a book called Spanish Ballads, edited by Colin Smith (Bristol Classical Press).
